A new UK survey has reviewed 600,000 live births and shown maternal obesity has increased from 8 per cent in 1989 to nearly 16 per cent in 2007, affecting the health of both mother and baby and contributing to rising NHS costs. At greater risk were:
-
Older mothers
-
Women from black and ethnic minority groups
-
Women living in poorer areas
-
Women with larger families
-
Unemployed women
If you are obese and hoping to start a family, surgical weight loss – especially the gastric band – is well worth considering. The band has been shown in many studies to be perfectly safe during pregnancy and does not get in the way of the development of the baby. Furthermore, by losing weight you will increase your chances of becoming pregnant, dramatically reduce your obstetric risks and – very importantly – you will enjoy your pregnancy more!
