It is a well known fact that getting gastric bypass patients to attend for regular follow-up is extremely difficult. There are lots of reasons for this, but probably the most important is a widespread perception that once a gastric bypass is done, no follow-up is required. This is simply not true and you would be making a big mistake if you believed this.
Firstly, developing good nutritional habits and regular patterns of physical activity are just as important for bypass patients as they are for gastric band patients. Remember, up to 20% of bypass patients regain weight, largely due to the fact that they ignore the importance of lifestyle change.
Secondly, regular review appointments will give us an opportunity to assess your progress, to evaluate your nutritional status and to check that your vitamin and mineral supplementation is sufficient. This is very important if you are to avoid problems such as anaemia and bone fractures. It’s also a great opportunity to catch up - and a chance for you to show off too! After all, you give your car an annual service; don’t you think your body deserves one too? Good health is one of the most precious gifts in life. Invest in your body – you’re worth it.
