“My band’s not working” is a statement I hear from time to time in clinic. Occasionally this is true – maybe 3 or 4 times a year. Yet, I probably hear that statement 30 – 40 times a year.
If you are one of the people who think your band isn’t working then you need to reflect on the three factors that enhance success with a gastric band. We call this the success tripod because if any “leg” is missing, then you are likely to fail.
Firstly, it goes without saying that the gastric band must be implanted correctly. It just isn’t worth compromising on this. I’ve seen some dreadful implantations. Secondly you will need long-term expert aftercare and support and again you need to choose very, very carefully your weight loss surgery provider. The final leg of the tripod – and equally crucial – is you. You have to be committed to work with the gastric band to achieve your weight loss goals. If you are willing to do this, you have an excellent chance of success and the band can truly change your life.
