New York is planning an “obesity tax” on sugary soft drinks. If Governor David Paterson’s plan becomes law, consumers would pay more for non-diet versions of drinks such as Coca-Cola, the New York Times reported.
Mr Paterson is proposing the taxes to help close a budget deficit and improve the health of people in the state. Other states have sales taxes on soft drinks, sweets and snacks, but New York would be the first to distinguish between diet and non-diet products.
