Obesity, The 'O' Word

Sir Liam Donaldson, Chief Medical Officer for England, who talked about the"obesity timebomb" in his report of 2002, talks in this week's Scrubbing Up on the BBC website, about Obesity and the impact it is having on the country. He argues many people are still failing to deal with the realities of the obesity problem.

 

In his 2002 annual report he pointed to the increasing number of children and adults who weigh much more than previous generations.

Stating that there would be serious implications for the country's future health if the problem continued to grow unchecked.

 

In this new article Sir Liam discusses the impact obesity is having on our society and the costs we are now paying with a greater demand on our health services, reduced industrial productivity and increased incapacity benefit payments.

He estimates these costs to the national economy at £15 billion.
