BPD/DS patients experience the greatest, fastest and most durable weight loss of all obesity surgery procedures. It also has the biggest impact on weight-associated health risks, see below. On average patients lose 75-80% of their excess weight. Fewer side effects associated with a standard Roux-en-Y gastric bypass are also experienced with patients able to eat more normal meals resulting in greater satisfaction and avoiding ''dumping syndrome' which can be a problem with gastric bypass .
The following summarises the main health benefits of a BPD operation:
Type II diabetes
95% of patients will have complete resolution of their diabetes
Hypertension
85-90% of patients will be able to reduce or stop their anti-hypertensive (blood pressure) medication
Dyslipidaemia
90-95% show major improvement or complete resolution of abnormal blood fats (cholesterol, triglycerides etc)
Sleep apnoea
80-85% of those on CPAP† will be able to discontinue this and almost all will experience major improvements in sleeping patterns and reductions in snoring and daytime fatigue
Reflux
More than 95% of patients will experience major and rapid resolution of symptoms
Stress incontinence
A substantial proportion experience marked improvement or complete resolution of symptoms.
Infertility and PCOS*
Gastric bypass has been shown to correct the underlying hormonal problems and to restore fertility in more than 95% of cases
Asthma
Almost all patients with asthma experience marked improvement in symptoms and a reduction in medication
Liver disease (NASH)¶
There is complete resolution of the disease in 85-90% of cases after gastric bypass
Back pain and arthritis
Most patients experience marked reduction in joint and back pain and increased mobility
Psychological wellbeing
Depressive symptoms and anxiety are less, social interaction is improved and overall quality of life and vitality are enhanced
