Risks of a BPD/DS operation

  • After Biliopancreatic Diversion / Duodenal Switch obesity surgery there is a period of intestinal adaptation during which there may be frequent loose bowels, sometimes up to 10-15 times a day, which may persist for several months.  This usually settles, but in some cases may be permanent.

 

  • There may be excessive bloating, stomach cramps and frequent passing of foul smelling gas.

 

  • Greatly increased risk of protein malnutrition, anaemia and bone disease

 

  • Requires intensive vitamin and mineral supplementation for life

 

  • Regular monitoring of blood concentrations of iron, calcium, vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin B12, folic acid and liver function, essential.

 

  • Complex procedure with higher operative risks compared with RYGBP

 

  • May experience changes in body odour

 

  • Longer period in hospital (4 nights) compared with RYGBP (2 nights)
