BPD stands for Biliopancreatic Diversion. It is a more complicated gastric bypass procedure, in which portions of the stomach are removed, and the small pouch that remains is connected directly to the final.
The “Bandinaro” is an operation exclusively performed for Healthier Weight by Professor Franco Favretti and Dr Gianni Segato.
This is a modified BPD originally devised by Scopinaro, but with the difference that we do not remove the stomach and we leave the gastric band in place. Because it combines the best elements of the Scopinaro and the gastric band, the procedure is called “Bandinaro”.
Essentially the band is left in position and we add in a procedure which results in bypass of large segment of small bowel. This produces malabsorption, i.e. reduces the absorption of calories and in doing so accelerates weight loss. Thus the Bandinaro combines the restriction of the gastric band with the malabsorption of the modified BPD – the best of both options. Professor Favretti and Dr Segato have used this additional procedure to great effect.
