Post-operative complications rates for the gastric band are low, but even in the best centres they do happen from time to time. Any provider who does not explain band complications and their incidence is not giving you the full story. The common recognised complications are:

  • Device failure - port or tubing leakage
  • Flipped access port
  • Access port infection
  • Band slippage
  • Band erosion


If you experience one of these complications and you do not have a warranty you would have to pay again to have revisional surgery in a specialist hospital by a specialist surgeon. You should assume that your risk of experiencing one of these complications within 2 years is 1 in 20. In some other centres the risk is far higher.

Because our complication rates are so low we are the only provider able to offer a 2 year band warranty in our standard band package. It means you have financial peace of mind safe in the knowledge you’ll be cared for in a specialist centre, and at no additional cost. You are free to concentrate on maximising your weight loss

  • How common are these complications ?
    A Healthier Weight gastric band patient experiences a significantly lower risk of complications than patients of other centres. For example:

  • How long does the gastric band warranty last – why not a lifetime ?
    The warranty lasts for 2 years from the date of your procedure. It’s not possible to give a completely open ended warranty because we are unable to predict complications that could arise 30-40 years after a band has been implanted. The cost of doing so would be prohibitive.

  • How do I find out if my complication is covered by the gastric band guarantee ?
    You would report your symptoms to Healthier Weight immediately and we would organise the necessary investigative tests. Upon completion of these tests Healthier Weight’s Medical Director would confirm in writing if your complication is covered under warranty

  • How much does the warranty cost ?
    Nothing. The 2 year warranty is included within our gastric band packages.

  • What is excluded ?
    • Removal of the gastric band without any clinical requirement to do so. Specifically, if you elect to have the device removed because you have decided you no longer wish to have it implanted
    • Repositioning of the band access port for cosmetic reasons
    • Pouch dilatation caused by a patient’s maladaptive eating, i.e. by non compliance with the recommended dietary regime
    • Any complication or medical condition other than those listed above

  • Can I go anywhere for my revisional surgery ?

    No, the warranty only applies when revisional surgery is organised by Healthier Weight.
