Sleeve Gastrectomy

The sleeve gastrectomy is a purely restrictive procedure which is fast becoming a popular alternative to the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGBP)

It has a number of advantages over bypass, including the fact that it is much simpler and quicker to perform.

Sleeve gastrectomy was originally developed as the first of a two-stage procedure in patients who were seriously obese and for whom the risk associated with a full gastric bypass or duodenal switch, was too great.

The sleeve resulted in significant weight loss and reduced anaesthetic risk, allowing the patient to proceed to the second stage of the bypass or duodenal switch 9-12 months later.

However, many patients did so well with the sleeve alone, that no further surgery was required.  Nowadays sleeve gastrectomy is being used more and more as a single-stage weight loss procedure.
