Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories

Miracle Baby Boy Named After Healthier Weight Staff

Following five previous miscarriages and two still births, Liz Sookarry considers the birth of her son, William David Stuart, in April 2010 as something of a miracle. A miracle that she attributes directly to the specialists at Healthier Weight. The support in particular that Dr David Ashton, Medical Director at Healthier Weight and Stuart Ingram, the clinic’s Health Educator provided, enabled Liz to give birth to a 7lb baby boy that she is proud to have named after the two people who made it possible.

Liz, 34, suffers from a rare blood disorder called Antiphospholipid which causes a lack of blood-flow through the umbilical cord. Obstetricians had told her that due to the disorder coupled with her being seriously overweight she may never have a baby. Her only hope of carrying a baby full term was to take blood thinning medication, but in order to do that Liz first had to lose no less than twelve stone in weight!

“After losing seven babies my husband and I despaired and had almost resigned ourselves to adoption” said Lynn. “I weighed 24 stone and in order to lose the required weight I knew I needed specialist help to be able to realise my dream of having a baby”.

Liz before losing 12 stones with a gastric bypass

Liz contacted Dr David Ashton who recommended Liz for gastric bypass surgery which she underwent in September 2008. The weight loss surgery coupled with advice and guidance from Stuart enabled Liz to lose 12 stone in weight. On August 8th 2009, less than a year after the surgery, Liz discovered she was pregnant again. Liz was delighted and was convinced that this time it was going to work.

Due to her weight loss Liz was allowed to have a heparin injection twice a day throughout her pregnancy to keep her blood thin enough to allow oxygen and nutrients through to the baby. Liz was delighted to be told she was having a baby boy and immediately promised Dr Ashton and Stuart Ingram that she would name her baby after them and chose the names David and Stuart as her son’s middle names. Liz’s husband chose William as the first name for their baby boy which also happened to be Dr Ashton’s first name.

“Following my surgery I promised Dr Ashton and Stuart that if I ever had a baby boy I would name it after them” said Liz “the birth of my amazing son would not have been possible without the help, support and guidance that Healthier Weight offered me,  William David Stuart Sookarry is the love of my life” commented Liz.

Dr David Ashton, said “I am delighted that due to her gastric bypass Liz has been able to successfully give birth to a son!  Stuart and I are honoured to learn that the baby boy has been named after us both, it is very rewarding to realise that the team at Healthier Weight have been able to help Liz realise her dream of finally becoming a mother”.

Liz, who lived in Stockport at the time of the treatment, returned to her native country , the United States and now lives in Danville, Illinois.
