Regular physical activity is essential to health. If you would like to start a regular exercise programme, the remainder of this section will tell you how to go about it safely.
How should I start?
The short answer is ‘carefully’. If you haven’t exercised for a long time, and in particular if you are over 40 – it is very important to start gently and increase the amount of exercise you take gradually. If you are over 50, you would be wise to see your doctor before starting. If you try to do too much too quickly, you risk getting injured and you may feel less inclined to exercise in the future. Ask yourself the following questions:
- Have you ever been told that you have a heart problem and advised to limit your physical activity?
- Do you have chest pain or discomfort which is brought on by exercise, e.g. walking up a hill?
- Do you have episodes of dizziness or feeling faint?
- Are you a diabetic?
- Do you have any bone or joint problems that may limit, or be aggravated by, physical activity?
- Are you currently taking any medication for high blood pressure, angina or any other heart condition?
- Are you aware of any other health problems that may expose you to unnecessary risk during exercise?
If the answer to any of the above is yes, then you should seek advice from your family doctor before going any further.
A word about proper footwear and clothing. It is important that you use the correct tools for the job otherwise you will be uncomfortable and increase the risk of injury. Walking or jogging on hard surfaces can be quite hard on the joints so do make an investment in sensible footwear. The technology involved in producing modern exercise footwear is remarkable - take full advantage of it. That old pair of flat shoes you found in the attic just will not do!
So far as clothing is concerned, you can choose whatever you like – and the choice is fantastic! The only caveat is that functionality must still take precedence over fashion. It must be comfortable, cool in summer, warm in winter and allow a full range of movement.
