Gastric Band Removal

One of the reasons you chose a gastric band in the first place is probably because it is a reversible operation that keeps the option of removal or revision to another procedure open at a later date.

Removal may be required for several reasons, including:

  • A complication with your band, such as erosion
  • Personal preference, you no longer want to work with it or attend adjustment appointments
  • You have regained some of the weight you lost with your band and now want to convert to a more powerful procedure such as a gastric bypass or gastric sleeve
  • Perhaps you were unable to work with the diet regime required with the band and want to progress to a different type of procedure

The good news is that if you do want your band removed it is usually a very straightforward operation that requires less than 30 minutes in theatre. It is done under general anaesthetic and would usually be a day case procedure, meaning you would go home on the same day.

The complications of the gastric band removal operation are similar to those of band placement and published data shows gastric band removal to be a safe and effective day case procedure.

In the rare case of band erosion where the band device has eroded into the stomach, the erosions bring a small, but increased risk of stomach perforation. Erosions may be dealt with surgically or endoscopically, and your surgeon will discuss this with you before you proceed.

Do I need to have the band removed?

Before we look at having your gastric band removed, we always discuss the option of helping you to get your band working again. If you’re struggling with your band, you might think that it is you who is failing when in fact the problem could be with the device itself eg if the band is leaking. We always recommend a clinic and x-ray review if you experience a sudden loss of the sensation of fullness you used to enjoy.
