The Band Butler Blog

Welcome to the Band Butler Blog (‘Triple B’)

In this blog I’ll give you my steer on weight loss surgery and everything related to it. Like any good butler I’ll try and provide wise counsel alongside some snippets of information that may help keep you on the straight and narrow. Most readers will either have had a gastric band or will be considering having one. For good measure I’ll talk from time to time about other procedures too as well as diet and lifestyle considerations.

I hope you enjoy reading it.

General weight loss news

  • 10 reasons why you should reconsider surgery abroadMartyn Berrett We are always horrified to hear that a patient has decided to have their weight loss surgery overseas, but why do we think this? We know that price is important and so when you see what appears to be the same procedure appreciably cheaper overseas,... 08 August 2017 11:13am
  • Fat shaming: How society views the obeseMartyn Berrett It's worth taking a little time to reflect on why someone who is taking such a positive step like weight loss surgery would view themselves so negatively and the answer lies in the way society view the overweight and obese. 04 August 2017 10:05am
  • Update: Weight loss & the NHSMartyn Berrett Why is the NHS doing fewer weight loss surgery procedures when ever more people would benefit from them? It would be too easy to give the simple answer that there isn't enough money but to really understand the problem a deeper appreciation is... 07 July 2017 1:15pm
  • Overweight women earn £3k lessMartyn Berrett In 2016 Exeter University published a study that showed that a woman weighing 2 stone more than another woman would on average earn £3000 less than her 'slimmer' peer. The same study also showed than shorter men earned less than their taller peers. 13 July 2017 10:18am
  • Why aren't we taking the Diabetes Epidemic More Seriously?Martyn Berrett Its officially Diabetes week! It's a good time to remind people that Diabetes has officially been labelled a global Epidemic. An estimated 4.5 million people in the UK alone are living with Diabetes and worse still 11.9 are estimated to be at... 12 June 2017 3:18pm
  • The 'fat but fit' balloon has been burstMartyn Berrett Like me, you may have seen health programmes on TV where there has been a person talking about the health dangers of obesity (usually a doctor) and the other side of the argument is represented by someone who argues that there is no evidence that... 01 June 2017 8:48am
  • Don't eat until you are fullMartyn Berrett Most people think that eating until they are full and eating until they are no longer hungry are the same thing. In fact they are quite different. Sounds mad doesn't it but to help me explain the point, imagine you are really hungry and start... 26 May 2017 9:30am
  • Understanding emotional eatingMartyn Berrett Of all the possible reasons for overeating, “emotional” factors are among the most common. I'm sure we'd all admit to having overeaten in response to a stressful event or an emotional upset at some point in our lives. 12 May 2017 9:35am
  • Will a gastric band work for me?Martyn Berrett Well, it's impossible to be sure whether a band will work for you and in clinic last week I saw a lady who was very concerned about this question. It's perfectly natural as the investment in a band is a big one for anyone with what might be... 31 March 2017 2:14pm
  • Why won't the NHS pay for my surgery?Martyn Berrett Good question. The financial argument for the NHS to pay for a procedure for every person who has a BMI above 35 coupled with a serious weight related co-morbidity (such as Type 2 Diabetes or Sleep Apnoea) is very compelling indeed. 17 March 2017 12:05pm
  • Am I ready for weight loss surgery?Martyn Berrett I was in clinic recently when I met with a lady who was considering her weight loss surgery options. There were lots of reasons to think a band would be a good option but she said she preferred a sleeve because her friend had had a band and it... 08 March 2017 12:15pm
  • Will surgery cure my weight problems?Andrew Jones The simple answer is no. The weight loss procedure ALONE will not cure the problem. That said, it is a big part of the solution. I spoke to someone, Halima, only the other week who had lost 10 stones after weight loss surgery. Halima recently won... 17 February 2017 11:35am
  • Can I get weight loss surgery on the NHS?Martyn Berrett The truth is that it's very unlikely you'll be able to get weight loss surgery through the NHS. Although the guidelines for the NHS say that you are eligible for surgery if you have a BMI (body mass index) above 35 (plus an associated health... 10 February 2017 12:15pm
  • How to eat with a gastric bandMartyn Berrett The gastric band is a great procedure and has been helping people manage their weight for over 20 years. The keys to success with the band are to have the band correctly placed, to have proper adjustments, to eat the right foods and to eat them in... 30 June 2017 11:28am
