According to Single Care eating disorder statistics 2022, global eating disorder statistics increased from 3.4% to 7.8%. With more females than males from suffering with them.
With binge eating disorders, people who suffer from this will mostly be concerned about their weight. Many people who binge eat are overweight or even obese.
If you struggle to break out of the binge eating cycle no matter how hard you try, you may be looking for a long-term solution to stop this.
Is weight loss surgery something that could help? We spoke with an expert weight loss surgeon, Mr Jambulingham about binge eating disorders and weight loss surgery to get some answers.
“Binge eating disorder is an eating disorder, with a psychological background”. Mr Jambulingham explained.
There are many different types of people who suffer from binge eating disorders. While some people are clinically underweight and need medical help to regain, there are also people who are overweight and continue to gain weight through binge eating.
Whichever end of the spectrum, both people need to seek medical help and learn how to develop a healthy relationship with food and body image.
Some people may be able to get over their binge eating disorder with therapy and counselling, to dig deeper into the problem.
For those who need more than this, weight loss surgery could be a solution.
“The volume of food they can eat is restricted for example with a gastric sleeve or a gastric bypass, which will be able to break the cycle.” Mr Jambulingham told us, and explained how weight loss surgery can help, as it will physically not allow somebody to overeat because there is not the capacity for it in the stomach anymore.
Although Mr Jambulinghm still stated that psychological input was just as important to have a long side surgery to help patients overcome their problems. “With Psychological input, it helps treat this condition in the long term.”
