By identifying the differences between inhaled and exhaled air it can tell how efficiently your body uses oxygen. When exhaling it measures carbon dioxide levels and can determine the number of calories your body needs at rest (your resting metabolic rate) and where that energy is coming from, whether carbs (sugar) or fats.
So, this incredible little machine holds an important key if you are trying to lose weight. It will measure how many calories per day your body needs to survive. That number will be personal to you, not what a diet company, your GP, the newspapers or anyone else says, but exactly what you personally need. That means you can tailor your calorie intake to match your needs and, if you want to lose weight, reduce your calorie intake accordingly. Most importantly, you’ll be doing this through hard data rather about your own body rather than guesswork.
When trying to lose weight you need to make sure that your body is using your fat stores to provide a proportion of the energy you need. The ECAL machine will also measure this.
It all means that if you want to understand better how much energy (calories) your body needs every day and how you can change the balance of your diet to burn more fat, this simple test will give you the insight you need.
I had an ECAL test recently and was amazed by the speed and simplicity of it. You need to fast for 6 hours before the test but that was easy because I had it first thing in the morning. I arrived at the clinic, sat in the chair, had a small nose clip put on my nose and breathed into the mouthpiece for a few minutes. After a few seconds you forget you are even having a test. I was all done within 15 minutes.
Soon after the test you receive a written report with the findings and that enables you to make changes to your diet. Repeated tests will show what effect those changes are having on where your energy is coming from. The scales will tell you whether this is translating into the weight loss you are seeking.
