Gastric Bypass | Explained By Bariatric Surgeon

There are 4 main bariatric procedures that help people who suffer with obesity to lose weight. There are: the gastric sleeve, the gastric band, the gastric bypass and the ESG (non-surgical sleeve)

All of the above procedures have the same purpose, to help people lose weight in a healthy and controlled way with long-term results.

Understanding all of the procedures can be overwhelming. So, we sat down with one of our consultants – Mr Manel Riera who currently operates out of Nuffied Shrewsbury and Nuffield Wolverhampton, and asked him to explain these procedures starting with the gastric bypass.

The gold standard of weight loss surgery

With years of experience in bariatrics and weight loss surgery, Mr Riera was quick to state that the gastric bypass is the gold standard. It is more invasive than a procedure such as the gastric band or the gastric sleeve but, it has “decades” of proof that patients with this procedure continue to keep the weight off for a longer period of time.

How does the gastric bypass help you lose weight?

Manel explains how the gastric bypass is a powerful form of weight loss surgery. It actually helps patients lose weight in two ways.

  • The gastric bypass reduces the capacity of the stomach from full-sized into a small pouch, meaning you don’t need to eat as much to feel full.
  • The pouch gets connected to the small intestine, bypassing the rest of your stomach and fewer calories are then absorbed.

How much weight can you lose with a gastric bypass?

Compared to the gastric sleeve and gastric band, Mr Riera tells us that the bypass is the one procedure that provides the most weight loss. But how much weight can you actually lose with the gastric bypass?

Everyone has a different weight loss journey however, we expect most patients who have gastric bypass surgery, to lose up to 80% of excess weight. The weight loss will happen between the first 6 and 24 months for most people.

How to know if the gastric bypass is for you?

If you have a particularly high BMI such as 60 then the bypass would be the best procedure to have. However if your BMI is lower, around 30 – 40 the gastric sleeve or the gastric band might be a better option. If you don’t know you’re BMI you can use our calculator here
