At Healthier Weight, we understand that beginning your bariatric journey is a life changing experience, one that goes beyond just physical change. It’s a journey of self-discovery, strength, and personal growth. As you navigate the path toward a healthier, more fulfilling life, we believe it’s crucial to pause and reflect on your bariatric journey, not only for your physical progress but also for your mental and emotional well-being. In this blog, we emphasise the importance of giving yourself gratitude and reflecting on your journey, regardless of your procedure.
Celebrate Your Achievements
Your bariatric journey is a series of milestones that signify all of your accomplishments, whether that be losing your first pound, no longer needing an extender belt on an airplane, fitting back into your wedding ring or so much more! If you’ve recently undergone surgery or your years post-surgery, it’s vital to celebrate the progress you’ve made. Take a moment to appreciate the weight you’ve lost, the energy you’ve gained, and the newfound confidence that has blossomed. Remember, each pound shed is an achievement, and every step you take is a victory.
2. Embrace Self-Compassion
Weight loss journeys, particularly bariatric ones, can be challenging and emotionally charged. It’s essential to be compassionate with yourself during this process, try treating yourself how you would treat a friend. Reflect on the moments when you’ve shown the determination and self-compassion you know is within you. Acknowledge the days when you made healthier choices and forgave yourself for any setbacks, especially during the festive season. Self-compassion is a vital tool in your bariatric journey, helping you maintain a positive outlook and mental well-being.

3. Reconnect with Your "Why"
When you decided to embark on this journey, you had a compelling reason—a reason “why”—that motivated you to seek a healthier life. Take time to revisit your “why” and reflect on how far you’ve come. Has your motivation evolved? Have you achieved the initial goals you set for yourself? If so, make new ones but appreciate that you have reached those goals. Reflecting on your “why” can reignite your determination and provide fresh inspiration to continue your journey.
4. Gratitude for Support
Despite it being your life, you are never alone during your bariatric journey. You’ve had the support of medical professionals, family, friends, or support groups that have played a significant role in your success. Expressing you gratitude towards your supporters can strengthen your sense of community and encourage this continued progress. Share your experiences and the positive impact these individuals have had on your journey, and remember to say, ‘thank you.’
5. Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness is a powerful tool to stay connected with your bariatric journey. By living in the present moment, you can appreciate how far you’ve come while maintaining enthusiasm for the future. Practice mindfulness through meditation, deep breathing, or simply taking time to savour your meals, and it will reinforce the gratitude you feel for your journey.
6. Inspire Others
Your bariatric journey is more than just a personal transformation; it can also be an inspiration to others. Share your experiences and your success with others who may be considering a similar path. By doing so, you not only provide hope and guidance but also reinforce the gratitude you feel for your own journey.
