How Does a Gastric Sleeve Work?

how does a gastric sleeve work?

An operation that allows patients to eat small portions, feel full and suppress hunger sounds pretty powerful. Well, this is exactly what the gastric sleeve does.

For those who have struggled to lose weight with other methods such as diet plans, boot camps etc. the gastric sleeve is a long-term solution to losing weight and keeping it off.

What Is Gastric Sleeve

The Gastric Sleeve is a type of weight loss surgery or bariatric surgery.

A bariatric surgeon makes small incisions through keyhole surgery into the abdomen. Once inside the stomach the weight loss surgeon removes around 80% of the stomach and creates a new one with the remaining portion — which is formed into a sleeve-shaped tube. Hence why it gets the name “gastric sleeve”.

How Does The Gastric Sleeve Help You Lose Weight?

The gastric sleeves help you lose weight in two ways.

  • With a much smaller stomach, there is much less room to receive food. As a result, patients are not able to eat as much food as they did before.
  • The second is due to the removal of the hormone Ghrelin. This is the hormone that produces our appetite especially for sugary things. Once this is removed with 80% of the stomach, people have far fewer cravings, and their appetite is suppressed.

How Much Weight Will You Lose With a Gastric Sleeve?

Patients who have gastric sleeve surgery can usually expect to see 60-70% of excess weight loss in the first year of having the weight loss surgery.

This is of course assuming the patient follows the guidelines of working with the gastric sleeve. It is not a magic fix, the patient must work with the surgery.

“Gastric sleeve surgery is not the easy way out, it is a tool to help people suffering from the obesity disease,” Mr Kamal Mahawar says
