Happy fathers day to everybody celebrating father figures in their lives. To join in on the occasion we are sharing the story of Nik, our gastric bypass patient who lost 16 stone. He shared with us how the weight loss improved his role as a dad and make his relationship with his children stronger.
Prior to weight loss surgery Nik’s weight was around 34 stone at his heaviest. Struggling with having control over his relationship with food meant that even if he could lose weight, it didn’t stay off for the long term.
In 2019 Nik made the decision to have gastric bypass surgery, it was something he knew would provide him with long-term results to leading a healthy life.
The weight loss surgery Nik had, that helped him lose 16 stone is one of the most powerful forms of bariatric surgery. The bypass works by creating a small pouch from the stomach that attaches to the intestien and bypass’ the rest of the stomach. This results in weight loss as patients feel fuller quicker, and absorb much fewer calories.
Nik had many goals and motivations during his weight loss journey, a big one was to be an inspiration to his children. Something he said has been confirmed now by them himself.
His relationship with both his children, now in their teens and early twenties, had always been strong and good. But, Nik felt his size perhaps held him back from being able to take part in certain things that he would have liked to.
It’s the small things like being able to play football with his son without getting out of breath and wheezy. Going to the funfair and being able to join in on going on all the ride because he can fit on them now. Overall he’s involved in the precious memories.
Many people can make the assumption that weight loss surgery is a quick way to lose weight and look good without putting in any hard work. But anyone who was been through weight loss surgery knows that is far from the case.
For people like Nik, weight loss surgery is about finally being able to have control over your body and health. Making changes that aren’t easy but pay off and have incredible life-changing benefits. Yes of course losing weight and feeling more confident is a big part of weight loss but there are a number of health benefits and external benefits that come along with the process.
