Over the years we have seen thousands of people improve their health and happiness as a result of weight loss surgery. What is less well known is that we also see an improvement in their financial wellbeing too.

Not only do people report saving money on food, but we also find that their earning power improves too. In a recent blog, we wrote about the way society and employers have a  prejudice against obese employees. This was confirmed in a paper that was published in Obesity Surgery magazine*. The article was in fact titled, ‘Paid Work Increases and State Benefit Claims Decrease after Bariatric (Weight Loss) Surgery’.

Its conclusion was that patients who had a gastric band and gastric bypass surgery improved their financial wellbeing in the following ways:

  • There was a 32% increase in the number of patients in paid work
  • The weekly hours worked increased from 30.1 to 35.8
  • Fewer patients claimed state benefits
  • There was a decrease in obesity-related physical and emotional constraints on their ability to do work

This indicates that weight loss surgery can be self-funding. So, when you weigh up the health and quality of life benefits with the financial cost, the cost may not be as high as you first imagined.

This will vary according to individual circumstances but certainly, it’s something worth considering. If you want to explore the cost of weight loss surgery you can do so using the links below, by calling our team on 0800 313 4618 or by messaging us here.

While we can’t promise we can actually perform your procedure within the next several months, there is still opportunity to go through the eligibility and consultation stages. Our surgeons are on-hand to consult with you over the phone or Facetime (if available).

If you’d like to get ahead of the curve and plan a weight loss procedure with us in the future, we can add you to a priority waiting list for when we’re able to book hospital places again.
