After Shaun’s mental health hit rock bottom the world champion took the decision to have life-changing weight loss surgery with the gastric sleeve.
Like a lot of people who struggle with their weight, Shaun’s problems were not necessarily about losing weight but keeping it off.
Having been “the fat kid” since he can remember, the Essex born 40-year old says that he can’t remember not being on a diet since he was 15.
But Shaun’s, career which involves a lot of touring and moving around does not accommodate well for a super healthy life style.
Nearing 20 stone, coupled with his dwindling mental health Shaun searched for other options for weight loss.
There are a lot of options for medical weight loss. On one end of the scale, there are weight loss injections like Saxenda, and then on the other end, there is surgery like the gastric sleeve. A non-surgical procedure like the gastric balloon sits nicely in the middle.
For Shaun though, he wanted to make the biggest change saying “I wanted the most extreme option”. The gastric sleeve operation shrinks the stomach by 80%, resulting in feeling less hungry and eating smaller portions.
The snooker player, nicknamed “the magician”, went into detail about how the gastric sleeve has changed his life on the BBC sports podcast.
Shaun explains how the surgery hasn’t stopped him from eating and drinking what he did prior to the operation, but he can only have smaller amounts now.
