Last week Mr Jamie Kelly, the surgeon who pioneered the ESG procedure here in the UK visited our office to update us on the latest developments with this new and exciting procedure.
The ESG is a non-surgical procedure in which the stomach is sutured together to reduce its capacity. It is often referred to as the non-surgical sleeve because it reduces the size of the stomach along its length.
In fact, it works in quite a different way to the surgical sleeve. The surgical sleeve works by reducing stomach capacity and changing gut hormones to reduce appetite, whereas the ESG works by giving an early feeling of fullness and by reducing the speed with which foods exits the stomach into the bowel.
Although the ESG is still a young procedure compared to the surgical sleeve, there is a growing body of data to show that the results are very good. With an average excess weight loss of 50%-60%, outcomes are a little lower than for surgical sleeve (average 70%-80%), but there are some significant advantages to balance this:
- There is no cutting of the stomach so the risk of stale line leakage does not apply
- There is a faster recovery time than for surgery
- All of the stomach remains intact
Who should consider the ESG?There is a large group of potential surgery patients who should consider ESG, especially if you are in one of the following groups:
- You don’t like the idea of surgery
- You would consider a gastric band but don’t want the maintenance of band adjustments
- You want a gastric sleeve but don’t like the idea of having 85% of their stomach removed
- You have a BMI between 35 and 50
If you have a higher BMI or you are having surgery due to weight-related health issues you are already experiencing then the sleeve or bypass remains a better option.Otherwise, think about the ESG, it has never been easier to have a consultation.Mr Kelly is the UK leader in ESG and is also responsible for training new ESG surgeons.
As a result, his consultations are in demand.
We are delighted to announce that Mr Kelly has provided additional clinic availability exclusively for Healthier Weight patients, and there is better news still for people who are unable to physically get to his clinics in Southampton, as he has now begun weekly telephone consultation clinics.
If you would like to find out whether an ESG would be the right weight loss option for you, perhaps consider a telephone consultation. You can arrange this by calling our team on 0121 693 4488.
