People who are overweight or who suffer with obesity will more than likely struggle with joint pain. In some cases this joint pain can be chronic, causing osteoarthritis and resulting in patients not being able to do exercise without excruciating pain. There however, is a solution to easing joint pain through bariatic surgery.
It might come as a surprise to know that as little as 10 pounds excess weight can begin to add pressure to your joints.
There are a number of studies that prove the link between joint pain and being overweight. One study found that those who are obese (with a body mass index [BMI] between 30 and 35) are four to five times more likely to get arthritis in their knees.
Unfortunately, there is no way to reverse a condition like arthritis, however you can reduce the amount of pressure on the joints through weight loss and make the pain more manageable.
We know that it can be difficult to lose weight when you’re experiencing joint pain as it makes being active hard. Weight loss surgery could be a solution to help you lose weight.
Bariatric procedures all work in slightly different ways but all have the same result, weight loss due to the stomach being smaller. Being restricted on how much you can eat will help patients lose between 50 and 80% of excess weight in the first 6 months to 2 years of the surgery.
Last year we had the pleasure of talking to Jeanette, one of our gastric sleeve patients who suffers from painful arthritis. She had slowly became more and more immobile over the years due to her painful joints and weight gain. It got to a point where Jeanette was unable to walk long distances with our a mobility scooter, enough was enough Jeanette wanted her life back!
Struggling to lose weight due to being unable to move around a lot, she researched weight loss surgery, and after fully understanding her options she went for the gastric sleeve.
Now, Jeanette is over 7 stone down, and living life to the fullest! Not only has she lost the weight, but being 7 stone lighter had significantly reduced the pressure on her joints. Resulting in her being able to move around a lot more. She was over the moon that she no longer needed her mobility scooter and could join in on family walks.
