Why Weight Loss Medication Isn’t for Everyone
In recent years, weight loss medications and in particular weekly weight loss injections have seen a massive surge in popularity. Touted as ground breaking treatments for obesity and hailed by influencers and celebrities, they’ve become a go-to solution for many seeking fast, medically supported weight loss.
But while these medications can be transformative for some, they’re not the right fit for everyone.
At Healthier Weight, we’ve spoken with countless patients who tried injections but later discovered that a longer-term solution, such as weight loss surgery, was more suited to their needs. Here’s why medication isn’t always the magic bullet it’s made out to be — and how to know if another option might be better for you.
1. Side Effects Can Be Difficult to Manage
Although weight loss injections are generally well tolerated, many patients experience side effects ranging from mild to disruptive. These may include:
Persistent nausea
Vomiting
Constipation or diarrhoea
Fatigue
Headaches
Reduced appetite to the point of malnourishment
For some, these side effects interfere with daily life, making it difficult to maintain consistency or fully benefit from the medication.
2. The Cost Can Quickly Add Up
Weight loss injections must be taken weekly (or sometimes daily), and the costs are ongoing. With prices starting from £200 – 250 per month, long-term use can soon outweigh the one-off cost of a permanent procedure like a gastric sleeve or bypass.
Patients who stop taking the medication often see the weight creep back, meaning it becomes a financial and emotional commitment many weren’t prepared for.
3. Weight Often Returns After Stopping
One of the biggest challenges with medication-led weight loss is maintenance. Studies and real-world experiences show that once the injections stop, many patients regain a significant portion — or all of the weight they lost.
This highlights a critical issue: while the medication helps suppress appetite, it doesn’t always lead to sustainable lifestyle changes. For many, a structured aftercare programme (like those included with weight loss surgery) offers a stronger foundation for long-term success.
4. You’re Not Alone – Real Patient Stories
Two of our recent patients, Eve and Kerry, know this journey all too well.
Both initially tried weight loss injections and saw results. But over time, they found the side effects hard to manage and the lifestyle changes hard to maintain. Eventually, both decided that a more permanent solution was the right next step — and went ahead with weight loss surgery at Healthier Weight. Here’s what they had to say:
5. It’s About Finding the Right Path for You
We’re not here to dismiss weight loss medication. For many, it provides a much-needed jump start. But it’s important to assess all your options and understand that what works for one person may not work for another.
If you’re feeling unsure, know that you’re not alone — and help is available.
