Will weight loss surgery ‘cure’ my weight problems?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The simple answer is no. The weight loss procedure ALONE will not cure obesity. That said, it is a big part of the solution.
I spoke to someone, Halima, only the other week who had lost 10 stones after weight loss surgery.

Halima recently won the Healthier Weight model search and she is in a good position to comment. She told me that she has turned her health, her career and her whole outlook on life around. She said that when you have weight loss surgery you have to be ready to completely overhaul your lifestyle habits, your food choices and your eating habits at the same time.

She’s absolutely right. Surgery is the catalyst for change and it will make it easier for you to lose weight but in order to lose all of the weight you want to and to stay at your new lower weight long term you need to accept the need to change the way you eat and live.

Don’t get me wrong, the surgical procedures are powerful and most patients will lose over half of their excess weight, but those who lose the most and keep it off are those who are ready for a bigger change.

I watched on TV the other week when a celebrity who has had weight loss surgery, and successfully lost weight, complained that the surgery had ruined her relationship with food, and that she didn’t get pleasure out of food any more.

I understood what was said but was still a little confused. You can’t carry on eating what you were eating before and expect to be a lower weight. All weight loss operations work by helping you reduce the quantity and type of food you eat. Most people enjoy eating and would eat more than they do were it not for having to ‘watch their weight’. So, when you are considering weight loss surgery you need to be ready to accept that there will be a change in your eating habits. Put simply, the benefits of being a lighter, healthier you, you need to outweigh the loss of your old eating habits.

Halima’s advice is better than anything I can say. If you are thinking about weight loss surgery and you feel ready to overhaul your lifestyle then go for it. If not, then wait until you are.
