Your pre and post operative diet is important for several reasons. In addition to the health benefits outlined below, it will help you transition from your old diet to your new and will help you reach your first weight loss milestone. We set all of our gastric band
patients a target to lose at least 5% of their starting weight within 5 weeks of surgery. Those patients who follow our own pre and post operative diet lose on average 7.5%*.
5 days before surgery - Liquids only diet
3 Weight to Go shakes or porridge + 2 Weight to Go soups / per day
During the pre-op diet period (5 days for most patients*), we combine high protein levels with low calories at 800-1000 kcal per day. We recommend use of soups that come in a pouch so you can be confident in the number of calories you are consuming and stay within the recommended limits. The health benefits are:
- Reduce fat around the stomach and liver making surgery safer
- Shrink the size of the liver
- Improve surgical outcomes and recovery
- High protein to preserve and protect muscle tissue
Liquids only diet in weeks 1 & 2. Moving onto pureed foods in weeks 3 & 4
3 shakes/porridge + 1 soup / day 3 shakes/porridge + 1 soup + 1 meal / day
Our main concern in this post operative period is to reduce the risk of a complication. In the weeks after your surgery, we are especially interested to keep retching and vomiting to a minimum. The soups and meals in weeks 3 and 4 should be in pureed form without lumps (baby food texture) and we recommend using meals from pouches so you can be confident in the number of calories you are consuming.
Vitamins and Minerals – One of the benefits of your surgery box is that all products are fortified with all the key vitamins and minerals you need to stay healthy. Consuming 4 products a day will give you 100% of your RDA.
We do not recommend taking a vitamin and mineral supplement in tablet form during this phase. If you choose to do so, make sure that it is either in powder form or is ground in order to reduce the risk of retching or vomiting, something we want to avoid during this period.
The "Surgery Box" is popular because it combines great tasting products, the diet is easy to follow, and it delivers good results. There's no shopping, cooking or anxiety, the diet plan lets you get on with recovering and adapting your eating after your operation.
