Can the Stomach Stretch After Bariatric Surgery?
Yes, the stomach can expand slightly over time, but it does not return to its original size. Weight regain is primarily linked to dietary habits, not irreversible stomach stretching. The pouch reset diet may help reinforce portion control, but scientific evidence does not support it as a method to shrink the stomach. Long-term success depends on sustained dietary changes, regular exercise, and ongoing support.
Weight regain occurs in 20-40% of bariatric patients within 2-5 years post weight loss surgery (1). Factors include poor dietary choices, lack of exercise, and behavioural habits rather than significant stomach stretching. The stomach is elastic and expands with food intake. However, studies show that while slight pouch expansion can occur, it does not return to its original size (2). Weight regain is primarily linked to increased food intake and poor habits, not irreversible stomach stretching.
Does a Pouch Reset Diet Work?
The pouch reset diet is a psychological tool to reinforce portion control, but there is no scientific evidence that it physically shrinks the stomach. Studies emphasise that long-term weight management depends on sustained dietary changes, exercise, and behavioural support, not short-term resets (3).
Long-Term Success Strategies
Patients who participate in regular follow-ups, nutritional counseling, and support groups have better weight maintenance outcomes with procedures like the gastric sleeve surgery (5). Strength training and physical activity help preserve muscle mass, preventing metabolic slowdown and weight regain (4).
