Can I get a gastric sleeve on the NHS?

The gastric sleeve is now the dominant surgical procedure worldwide in the treatment of obesity. The same applies in the NHS here too.

Whether you are eligible for a gastric sleeve in the NHS will depend on your body mass index, your weight history and your general state of health. When selecting who is eligible for surgery the NHS uses NICE guidelines. These are guidelines provided indirectly by the Department of Health and they seek to balance the national health requirement with the funding available. As such NICE and the NHS Trusts they inform have tough decisions to make.

Unfortunately, only a small fraction of the people who are eligible for gastric sleeve using the NICE criteria actually have a procedure in the NHS. Despite over 1 million people being eligible for NHS weight loss surgery, fewer than 5,000 procedures per year are done.

This is because NHS resources are stretched very thin. They do an amazing job with what they have but they are forced to make very hard choices about which procedures to prioritise. With the increasing demands of older and cancer patients, and the pressures on A&E from an ageing population weight loss surgery could be squeezed even more.

*Weight loss surgery results and benefits differ for each individual. Results cannot be guaranteed

If you have tried and failed to access gastric sleeve surgery through your GP and have given up on an NHS procedure, don’t despair. You are in the same position as most people. The sleeve is a great procedure and we offer it to patients with a BMI above 35. It delivers remarkable weight loss results and delivers them quickly. It also delivers significant health benefits. See details about the gastric sleeve here.

If you don’t think you’ll be able to get a gastric sleeve in the NHS or you are unwilling to wait, and you’ll probably have to wait for 2-3 years from the time your GP refers you, then your only option is to explore a private gastric sleeve.

Of course, it would be preferable to have the NHS fund it but when you pay yourself you get to choose your surgeon, hospital, date, etc. There are other benefits too. The gastric sleeve usually costs about £10,000. Prices tend to vary according to the quality of the aftercare package and warranty provided. Patients should check very carefully what is included and be sceptical about low cost providers. With surgery, you certainly get what you pay for.

At Healthier Weight we've just introduced the most comprehensive gastric sleeve package in the UK. Follow the link below to compare packages, their features and benefits.
