How Does It Work?
The gastric sleeve is the world’s fastest growing weight loss procedure. Take a look at the short video below to get a brief overview of the sleeve, how it works and how much weight you can expect to lose.
Gastric sleeve surgery is performed under general anaesthetic in around an hour. It is a laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery which means the surgeon will access your stomach via 4-5 small incisions in your abdomen.
The stomach is cut and stapled along its length with around 85% removed to leave a thin, banana-shaped sleeve. This reduces the physical capacity of the stomach meaning you feel full after much smaller portions. The part of the stomach that is removed is responsible for the production of a hunger hormone ghrelin. When removed, it leads to a reduction in levels of ghrelin and so a reduction in appetite and cravings.
Most people will lose about 70% of their excess weight and most of that weight loss will come in the first year.
In preparation for surgery, you will follow a low-calorie, liver reduction diet, usually for 2 weeks. After surgery, you will follow a specialist diet to give your stomach time to heal. Our dietitian will support you through this period and as you transition back to a normal diet.
Most patients require 1-2 weeks to recover and return to work and normal activities, although you may need 4-6 weeks if your job involves strenuous, heavy lifting. You can generally take a short-haul flight after 2-3 days but wait until 4-5 days post-op before you take a long-haul flight.

- Your Body Mass Index (BMI) is 35kg/m2 or over. Check yours
