What is POSE?
Primary Obesity Surgery Endoluminal (POSE) is a non-surgical procedure for weight loss developed several years ago. In the UK, the POSE procedure has been pioneered by Mr Jamie Kelly, a consultant surgeon, specialising in weight loss surgery.
About the POSE procedure
The procedure, not currently offered by Healthier Weight, is performed endoscopically through the mouth and inside the stomach, rather than through incisions in the abdomen. Special instruments are used to create folds in the stomach wall, reducing the overall capacity of the stomach and so the amount of food that can be eaten. It means that patients can expect to feel fuller for longer on smaller portions. Gastric bypass and gastric sleeve surgical procedures have the same effect, but are more invasive.
You may also be interested in the endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty, which is a new non-surgical gastric sleeve procedure.
Weight Loss Results with POSE
It’s too early to say what weight loss results you can expect from the POSE procedure. It’s a relatively new technique, and as such we do not have the wealth of data that exists to support the results of mainstream surgical procedures such as the gastric band, bypass or sleeve. We continue to track the weight loss results, and general well being, of Mr Kelly’s POSE patients and look forward to publishing data as soon as it’s available. It’s clear already, however, that for patients who do not want a surgical procedure, and are able to make the necessary changes to their diet and exercise regime, POSE could be an effective solution.
For the timebeing however the gastric band is likely to be the better option. For patients with a body mass index below 50kg/m2 and who are generally in good health, it represents the safest surgical weight loss option and can be expected to deliver approximately 60% excess weight loss over a 2 year period.
