Joanne’s Weight Loss Journey
“I knew this was the start of the rest of my life.”
Joanne Lost 15 stone
Joanne’s Weight Loss Journey
For Joanne, the battle with weight was lifelong. Since her teenage years, she had an emotional relationship with food, using it as comfort during both sad and happy times. As she grew older, so did her weight, reaching 16 stone by the age of 16. In 2009, she underwent gastric band surgery in an attempt to regain control, but it wasn’t the right fit for her body or her eating habits. She struggled with food intolerance and saw little success.
Then, in November 2021, life took a dramatic turn. While carrying washing down the stairs, Joanne slipped on a bedsheet, breaking both her tibia and fibula. Around the same time, she also caught COVID-19. The combination of these events was a wake-up call. She knew she needed to make a change—not just for her physical health, but for her future.
Determined to take control of her life, Joanne explored the option of a gastric bypass. She reached out via Instagram, desperately seeking help. To her relief, she received a response, setting her on a transformative journey. In February 2022, she underwent revision surgery, moving from a gastric band to a gastric bypass. The decision would alter her life in ways she never imagined.
Before surgery, Joanne avoided shopping in person, feeling uncomfortable about trying on clothes in public. But after losing an incredible 15 stone, her confidence skyrocketed. She now walks into any store, picks clothes off the rack, and enjoys the experience of shopping without hesitation.
Beyond fashion, her new lease on life has allowed her to enjoy things she once avoided. She can now take family trips and engage in activities she once thought impossible. A significant milestone was visiting Alton Towers, where she rode roller coasters for the first time in 20 years—without worrying if the safety harness would fit. Simple victories, like not needing an airplane seatbelt extender, have made a profound impact on her self-esteem and daily happiness.
Her journey wasn’t without its challenges. The night before surgery, sitting alone in a hospital room due to COVID-19 restrictions, she had moments of doubt. But as soon as she woke up post-surgery, she knew she had made the right choice. Since then, she has transformed not only physically but mentally, too. While she sometimes struggles to recognize herself in the mirror, she knows she is healthier, happier, and full of life.
Joanne’s advice to anyone considering weight loss surgery? Go for it. Looking back, she understands the hesitation and fear. But after seeing the incredible changes in her life, she encourages others to take the step toward a healthier, brighter future.
Her journey is a testament to resilience, self-love, and the power of making the right choices—even when they feel daunting. Joanne is living proof that change is possible, and life beyond weight struggles is worth every challenge along the way.
