Trigger for weight loss Unhappiness & lack of confidence
This is my open and honest account of my weight loss journey with Healthier Weight. I had tried for many years to gain control of my bad eating habits including attendance at support groups for over eaters and I paid £1000's to slimming clubs and for various quick fix diets that worked to start with but were impossible to maintain. The more weight I lost the more I gained after each failed attempt.
I felt my life had come to an end because I was so unhappy, then one day when I felt I couldn’t cope any more I saw a poster about obesity surgery and thought I have never tried that method so came home and did some research on the Internet. I rang the first number I came to, not Healthier Weight, but after an hour of talking to this organisation they told me that they wanted a fee of £500 before they met me and it was non-refundable. I didn’t feel comfortable with that and ended the call. I noticed that Healthier Weight had a free phone number for advice and I rang them straight away. I found the staff so helpful and reassuring that I made an appointment to see if I would be a suitable candidate for surgery.
I left Northampton and arrived in Birmingham. The taxi journey to the Healthier Weight office was quick and the fear started to set in. Would I be rejected? The door opened and the greeting was warm and welcoming. Talking about my weight was very upsetting as I had to admit to myself for the first time that I really could not do this on my own.
I have been overweight for many years. When I left school I was a size 10 and felt proud and happy with my figure. I did not lose weight after my first child and then I found I was pregnant again. I began to think what the heck; I am not overweight, just cuddly. My weight spiraled at an alarming rate.
I had my consultation with Dr Ashton who was frank and honest which I admired. I learnt that I was not greedy but had gained bad eating habits and couldn’t regain the control I needed on my own. The consultation offered me a lifeline and I left feeling 10 feet tall. Dr Ashton and his team had given me hope for the future*.
On my birthday I had my life changing new best friend fitted. I have come to call my gastric band my best friend, it needs looking after every day of my life – after all it has helped me make my life what it is today. I now have a new husband and a chance to lead a normal life*.
My weight loss for the first year was amazing*. I got a pedometer and kept a record of the steps I did daily and then increased them each week. Sometimes I struggled to achieve my own target but was determined to keep focused. I know that part of me will at times lose control of my eating but knowing that there is always a lifeline at the end of the phone with Healthier Weight is so reassuring.
When I first started my weight loss journey I was a size 28/30. I am now a size 10/12*. What Dr Ashton and the team have instilled in me is ….it is not just your weight to focus on. It is exercise and diet. When you have mastered this you will maintain your weight loss and become healthier in body and mind*.
I think anyone who is considering having weight loss surgery MUST contact Healthier Weight because you are not just a number; you will be treated as a real person who will receive first class before and aftercare. I hope that my experience of having a gastric band will help people considering this procedure to see that happiness can be achieved with determination and support.
March 2013 Update: Since having my band in 2007 I have never looked back. My weight loss gave me so much confidence – including the confidence to find a new husband! The most fundamental change however has been that it has allowed me to learn to have a life with food rather than let food be my life*.
