Trigger for weight loss Health reasons
I was at my heaviest weight ever in 2008 – 23½ stone. I felt horrible, uncomfortable, ugly and ashamed. I was only 25 years old.
I have a wonderful family in my husband Abidin, who I met in Marmaris, Turkey 7 years ago. I have always been a big girl for as long as I can remember. I was a big girl when I met him and because of my weight I was very shy around him and had no confidence. He wasn’t bothered about my weight at all, he said it’s what is on the inside that matters not the outside.
We got married in December 2003 in Abidin’s home town of Diyarbakir, Turkey, and even though we had a fantastic day, my thoughts were about how fat I looked in my dress, and that people were looking at me and talking about how big I was. It spoilt my day.
In March 2005, I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, Ayse Marie. Then two years later I found out I was pregnant with twins. This is where all my confidence disappeared, as people didn’t think I was pregnant, just that I had put a lot of weight on. My stomach wasn’t big at the top, but the bottom was very saggy and wobbly. I gave birth to twins a girl Leyla and a boy Kaya via c-section on 10 April 2007, when I weighed 22 stone.
I knew at that point that I had to do something if I wanted to be around to see my kids grow up. My weight was now stopping me from doing a lot of things normal people could do easily. I struggled to play with the kids as I was out of breath just walking down the street. I had tried many diets, but they never lasted long – when times were bad, food became my comfort.
In May 2008 I met the wonderful Dr Ashton and the Healthier Weight team at the Alexandra Hospital, Cheadle, where he suggested gastric bypass weight loss surgery was the best option for me.
On 8 June 2008, weighing 23½ stone I had the operation and felt a little out of it for the first day, but after that I felt great. I was limited to a liquid diet whilst recovering from the operation and in that time lost an amazing amount of weight. I went down 2-3 dress sizes*, and felt fantastic when my clothes were too big for me! Every stone I lost gave me more and more confidence, which is now through the roof! I’m now wearing size 16-18 clothes, where before I was a size 24-26*. I can enjoy being a mum and a wife due to my confidence, and I can walk and play with the kids without getting out of breath or having to stop to sit down.
I’m 7 months post-op and have lost a total of 8½ stone*, and it’s still coming off! I would like to say thanks to the Healthier Weight team and Dr Ashton, and also to my GP, but most of all to my husband Abidin for believing in me. I’m looking forward to going back to Marmaris in May 2009 to show the new me to my friends and family there!
