Trigger for weight loss Fed up of yo-yo dieting
I think people associate yo-yo dieting with women but since I was twenty years old my weight has fluctuated from a low of 12 stone up to 18 stone. I’m 50 this year so that’s thirty years of “weight cycling”. Despite being fairly active, I’ve run marathons at various times, I seemed to be unable to control my weight. I seemed to live on a diet.
Last year, with thoughts of my 50th birthday looming I had a medical with my doctor; a highly respected private GP in London, and discovered my weight was over 18 stone. He told me in no uncertain terms that I needed to do something about it immediately so as not to face the prospect of being 18 stones in ten years’ time. He told me that my weight would most certainly lead to diabetes and that I should expect to have serious problems with my joints.
My doctor referred me to Healthier Weight with the prospect of discussing a gastric band. This is something I would have never considered without my doctor suggesting it as I was not keen to consider what I felt was a radical solution to my weight loss problems.
Within ten minutes of meeting Dr Ashton I decided to have the operation in January 2011. It was a great decision. I have lost 4 ½ stone*. The key thing the band does for me is to limit portion size which was clearly my problem. For the first time in my life I am able to control my weight without great fluctuations. I also have to think about what I eat more carefully. Choosing healthier foods, which seem to work better with the band, has improved how I feel as well. I feel fitter at 50 than I did at forty and I doubt many men could say that.
